520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Outlines the elements of the school feeding programme that was implemented in the Commonwealth of Dominica in the early 1980's. The programme was implemented by the Food and Nutrition Council and received support from a number of international organizations. They were NOVIB, a private organization food aid programme based in the Netherlands, UNICEF and the OAS. The early years of the project focused on the building of kitchens within the communities themselves. The objectives of the programme entailed: the provision of school gardens, provisions of food and nutritional education to the parents, promotion of community participation with respect to food and nutrition, and the development of a nutrition surveillance system to monitor the programme's effects on the nutritional status of the children. Gives information on how the various groups within the programme handle their parts. A nutrition surveillance was established to monitor the success of the programme, but further analysis of the whole distribution is needed. The programme however seems to be successful. The children appreciate the hot lunches, they were more alert in the afternoon and they grew vegetables. On a whole the project was unique, in that it achieved an effective combination of community self-help, central nutritious lunches to deserving primary school children (extract from CARISPLAN abstracts).
